Engineering Leader

We are looking for an engineering leader to help us build a full-time engineering organization to expand our platform for Salesforce and beyond.

About Blue Canvas

At Blue Canvas we make developer tooling for "low code" devs. We have built a Git-based DevOps solution that enables Salesforce developers and admins to track and deploy code and configuration changes between Salesforce environments. This allows them to move faster without breaking things.

Since launching in 2017, we have found product market fit with customers like Spotify, Slack, Twilio, Sysco and Hershey's. At nearly $1M in annual recurring revenue, we are ready to transition from a founder-driven team into a well-oiled organization that can help us scale our initial success.

The founding team is hitting its natural limits and we are facing new challenges around scaling and supporting our growing customer base. (Our founders are still running support, for example). As a startup working with enterprise customers we are working to combine speed and agility with uptime, stability and security.

How we work

We are a distributed team first and foremost, with clusters around San Francisco (sales) and Berlin (engineering). We value strong written and verbal communication using long-form documents, Slack and Zoom. Spending face time together is important (after COVID) and we do bi-annual retreats where the whole team meets up.

This position should work European hours.

We believe in fanatical support and working (uncomfortably) closely with our customers to understand their needs. This customer focus has been the key to our success.

The role

As a founding engineering leader, we’ll want you to drive a vision for this role as well as for the engineering organization. Comfort with ambiguity and a strong vision for how an engineering organization ought to run are a must. In a given day you might:

  • Interview engineers and designers
  • Coach an engineer through a tricky technical problem
  • Design and run our sprint planning and backlog grooming
  • Present quarterly engineering goals to the company
  • Plan updates to our DevOps process
  • Help us scale support
  • Lead an architectural discussion before launching a major feature or new product
  • Meet a $100k customer and understand their latest feature request

You’ll start with us in a small, tight-knit team and have the opportunity to grow the role as we grow. We are looking for a founding engineering leader to compliment our rogue founder skillsets with a bit more organization.

Our ideal candidate is a player-coach, with a technical background and the ambition to lead a 30+ person engineering organization in the next few years. You will work directly with the co-founders to define and execute an ambitious 2021 roadmap. In the first year, we are looking for someone to help hire and manage our first 5 developers and empower them to be at their best. Over the following two years, we’ll expect this person to scale the engineering organization to meet our growth.

About you

  • You are excited to build a company and will “wear many hats” to deliver customer value
  • You’ve led a team of 5+ engineers with the ambition to grow an organization to 30+
  • You’ve may never have been a VP of Engineering (unless at a small company) but you want to be someday
  • You have experience managing a distributed team
  • You have a technical background and interest in developer tooling
  • You have been responsible for a highly available service with solid up-time stats
  • You have experience implementing DevOps
  • You’re open to working some evening hours to interface with US customers and the team in San Francisco
  • You’re empathetic and can understand your users and team well
  • You have a preferred management and leadership philosophy
  • You want to work directly with our customers to understand their needs and make them successful
  • You want to empower the next wave of software developers through better tooling

Nice to have

  • Experience with SOC-2 or other security compliance like PCI DSS
  • Excited to do a bit of coding in the beginning

Benefits

  • Quality-driven environment
  • Competitive compensation
  • Meaningful equity (percentage rather than number of shares)
  • Learning and coaching stipend
  • Flexible hours and vacation
  • Homeoffice and remote-friendly
  • Top-of-the-line equipment
